Natalie Hickey moonlights as a Mallesons' dispute resolution partner. One of the co-instigators of the IP Whiteboard concept in 2009, Natalie is our 'chief editor', which just means she has an oversight role. Natalie is a repeat viewer of The Social Network, confident that she too will have an idea you can give away for free, but which will be worth billions of dollars... She is otherwise an avid reader of celebrity magazines such as Who Weekly, but of course only buys it 'for the articles'. Her focus on IP Whiteboard reflects these interests. |
An interesting legal stoush has caught our eye this week, between Saul Zaentz Company (SZC) which owns the worldwide film, stage and merchandising rights to The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, and the owners of a theme pub called The Hobbit, located in Southampton, England. read more »
Thanks to an "overwhelming response" from our IP Whiteboard editorial committee (and we're serious, almost everyone responded) we can reveal a true diversity of personal slogan highlights. Before discussing themes arising from these, consider the work needed to create a great slogan. read more »
It's late January, the sun's shining, the Australian Open has just come an end, and yet our passion for IP remains undiminished. To that end, Creative Review's Top 20 slogans of ALL time caught the eye last week. Based in the UK, Creative Review is a publication focussing on all forms of visual communication. Inserted at the rear of the Copyright Act is a part concerning 'moral rights'. It's considered a poor cousin to the good stuff: juicy claims about infringement of musical, literary and artistic works, fights about film rights, and so on.

Or Must we return to the age of pen and quill, and why the Oxford English Dictionary matters to phone books
The dust is now starting to settle on the Australian High Court's decision to call 'time' to the longstanding question of whether copyright subsists in the White Pages and Yellow Pages telephone directories. Now that the answer is resolved as 'no', what does it mean more broadly for affected industries?

Did you know that yesterday was World Intellectual Property Day? Neither did we, until we were alerted to the fact by IP Australia recently. World IP Day is designed to raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trade marks and designs impact our daily lives, something we here at IP Whiteboard whole-heartedly support. So in the spirit of raising awareness of how IP touches each and every one of us we thought we would challenge our readers to a little quiz ...

Football Dataco and The Scottish Premier League are presently locked in litigation against Sportrader GmbH (a German company) and Sportrader AG (a Swiss company). The claimants, amongst other things, assert database rights in Football Live, a compilation of data about football matches in progress, collected mainly by ex-professional footballers on a freelance basis at relevant matches (truly a case of combining business with pleasure!). The defendants operate a service called "Sport Live Data" via betrader.com which provides live scores, results and other statistics, including UK football matches. The claimants say that the defendants are taking their data from Football Live without permission. This is denied. read more »
